
Khoulod is one of the middle class Syrians who are trying to improve their life style in the time of inflation. She always tries to warn people around here about what is going on in the community and the massive change which has happened in the previous years.
Khoulod is working as a teacher in one of the public preparatory schools. She has two daughters and a son which is 6 years old. She always try to convince around her about the importance of saving girls from those who are trying to “chase them”. Chasing them means in her logic making a sexual relationship with them.
Despite here elder daughter is not more than 12 years old, she is worried about her future. She says “in fact, I don’t know if I will let her to study in the university. What we hear about the girls there is shaking us. I don’t want my daughter to have a boy friend and to have a sexual relation ship before the marriage” .
Syrian Community is classified as a conservative community. Most of its women are wearing headscarf. Mosques are always full on Fridays and Ramadan which is the holy month of Muslims is the month of celebration for Syrians.
As most Syrians , Kholoud and her family are watching the Turkish series Noor which is translated to Arabic. She doesn’t like what is conflicting its morals in it. Most of its characters have boy and girl friends and some of them has an illegal pregnancy. She is watching it and trying to explain hardly to her daughters some of mysterious actions which are not understandable for them in their ages. Despite what kholoud and its counterparts of conservative Syrians are thinking , Syrian Community is changing rapidly. Syria as a state is classified as a secular state which has a real separation between the ruling regime and the religion. Although this fact , Syrian people are religious and have a full respect for their religious backgrounds. You can notice this in their life and you can also notice their moderate behavior in their relations with people from another religion.
It becomes popular to see girls and boys talking to each others , joking and even kissing each others. This act was a taboo in the past. The Media and the interaction with west make such these acts nearly accepted from the educated class. These acts are extending slowly to all community classes.
